A Mega List of Green Lists: The best of 2009 and beyond

A brand New Year, a brand New Decade! A great time to ponder over all the good and not so good green stuff over the last decade, and in particular 2009.  An appropriate time too, to look ahead in anticipation of the decade ahead.

I’ve compiled a “mega list of green lists” that I really enjoyed poring over. I hope you find them interesting and useful too.

By the way,  this website has uploaded a pilot version (currently under editing) of the 160 page ebook, ” A Quicklist of 1001 Steps to Save the Planet.”  (Now you know how fond I am of lists!)   This should get you jumpstarted with your Eco Action Resolutions for 2010!!  It’s free and all you need to do is to register on the site to download it.

Now back to the best green lists in 3 Parts

PART 1 :  THE GOOD GREEN STUFF

1) TOP 10 CLIMATE CHANGE CARTOONS OF 2009 from Climate Progress  Why not start with a little bit of climate humour?  After all, a lot of the events that happened over the year are really, well, laughable.

CARTOON CLIMATE SUMMIT

2) 30 HEROES OF THE ENVIRONMENT: 2009 from TIME   Thirty heroes and heroines who have championed the environmental cause in different ways throughout the globe.

PRESIDENT NASHEED

3. TOP 9 STORIES IN ENVIRONMENTAL POLITICS IN 2009 : EcoPolitology.org  An interesting slideshow.

4.  TOP 10 ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENTARIES OF 2009: Mother Nature Network  What a year it has been for environmental documentaries! 2009 added to the growing trend of the release of documentaries and movies covering a very wide range of environmental themes. The coverage, however continues to be quite west-centric except for The Cove, Crude and Garbage Dreams on the list. Hopefully the coming decade will see more focus on Asia, Africa and S.America.

And the TOP 10 ENVIRONMENTAL DOCS AND MOVIES OF THE DECADE again from Mother News Network

One documentary that’s unfortunately missing from the lists is the powerful movie on climate change by Franny Armstrong’s team, “The Age of Stupid“

”Avatar” by James Cameron could also pass off as an environmental movie, with its strong message about indigenous people!

5.  TOP GREEN STORIES It has been an eventful decade indeed for the environmental movement, with the awareness “green” issues and “green” activism gaining momentum. Will  2009 go down in history as the year the climate movement was “fully born” in the words of Bill McKibben, the founder of 350.org

Four lists that span the last decade are:

  • TOP GREEN STORIES OF THE ’00s by Grist.org  which is markedly different from the BIGGEST GREEN STORIES OF THE NOUGHTIES by EcoSalon
  •  TOP 10 ENVIRONMENTAL MOMENTS OF THE DECADE by CNN
  • THE DECADE IN REVIEW : LOOKING BACK ON 10 YEARS IN GREEN by TreeHugger

Two lists that cover the TOP 10 ENVIRONMENTAL STORIES OF 2009 are:

6.  GREEN AWARDS of 2009 : Two important awards for the year are the

GOLDMAN AWARD for Grassroot Environmentalists 2009 for excellence in protecting the environment

EARTH JOURNALISM AWARD honouring the best of climate change reporting

7.  OTHER GREEN LISTS in random order, worth taking a look are:

PART II: THE NOT SO GOOD GREEN STUFF

1. TOP 10 GREENWASHING CAMPAIGNS OF 2009 by Chicago Now   If  “only 2% of products that are labeled “eco-friendly” are entirely truthful,”  does that mean the rest is just greenwash in varying degrees?!  See if you can spot the greenwash, before reading the text below the photos.

2.TOP 10 ENVIRONMENTAL STORIES OF THE DECADE THAT YOU MAY HAVE MISSED by   Environment Working Group (EWG)

Newstand EWG

3.   ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS that the world has witnessed over the last decade and year are as follows:

  • TOP 10 ANTHROPOGENIC ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS by EU
  • 10 ENVIRONMENTAL LOSSES OF 2009 by National Geographic
  • MOST EXPENSIVE ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS OF THE DECADE by Business Insider
  • GONE: A LOOK AT EXTINCTION OVER THE PAST DECADE by Mongabay

4. I was not sure whether to classify this in the first or second part! These are truly wacky!

PART III:  LOOKING AHEAD 2010 and beyond

What are the hot, green trends likely to be? Let us see!  Here are some interesting lists:

  • TOP 10 LIST FORECAST OF EMERGING GREEN TRENDS by Batelle.org
  • TOP 10 GREEN TRENDS FOR CONSUMERS by Changeboard
  • TOP 10 NEW GREEN IDEAS AND TRENDS TO WATCH IN 2010 by Triple Pundit
  • 10  BEST GREEN JOBS FOR THE NEXT DECADE by Fast Company
  • TOP 10 EMERGING ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGIES by Live Science

That was quite a marathon run!  If you know of any more interesting green lists, or have any comments on any of the above, do feel free to drop in a line.

Best wishes for a fantastic Green New Year and New Decade !  Onwards and Upwards towards Eco Action !!

Warmly,

Bhavani Prakash
