The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.

– Chinese Proverb

By Bhavani Prakash

What is this life if full of care, we have no time to plant a single tree?

And what better way to express our gratitude to Mother Nature, compensate for our heavy footprint, and restore the land for generations to come, than to plant a tree? He who plants a tree, as Lucy Larcom the 19th century poet said, plants hope. He plants a joy, he plants peace, he plants youth, and he plants love.

Today, 5th June 2012 is World Environment Day and we take this opportunity to pledge our support to Project Green Hands, an inspiring grassroots initiative of the not-for-profit organisation, Isha Foundation. Its ambitious mission is to restore the green cover in Tamil Nadu, India to 33% by planting 114 million trees.

The programme was lauched in 2004 on World Environment Day, and has enabled the planting till date of more than 14 million saplings in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, with the help of more than 1.5 million volunteers.

In 2010, Project Green Hands (PGH) won a national award in India, the Indira Gandhi Paryavaran Puraskar award in recognition of its efforts to create environmental awareness and reverse ecological degradation. PGH also has a Guinness World Record of planting most number of saplings in three days: 8,52,587.

Listen to Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, Founder of Isha Foundation, share his thoughts about Project Green Hands and the urgent need to reforest the earth.

Video link here

A single sapling costs only Indian Rupees 50 (less than 1 USD and just over 1 Singapore dollar). Every little counts by way of your contribution.

By donating just Indian Rupees 50 per sapling through giveisha.org/pgh Project Green Hands (PGH) will plant trees on your behalf in Tamil Nadu, India. The saplings will be provided to farmers for planting in their farmlands. PGH tracks the exact location of their trees and the details of the farmer who will plant and take care of it.

Project Green Hands hopes to plant 300,000 trees for World Environment Day 2012. The World Environment Day campaign will run for June and part of July 2012. PGH continues beyond that period to achieve its larger objective of planting 6 million saplings in 2012.

Your help to spread the word, and contribution, however small, really matters in achieving these goals to reforest Tamil Nadu.

FAQs (as provided by Project Green Hands of Isha Foundation)

1. What is Give Isha?

GIVE ISHA is an online fundraising portal through which people can support for Isha Foundation’s social initiatives in Education – Isha Vidya, Health – Action for Rural Rejuvenation and Environment – Project GreenHands.

The featured project currently on Give Isha is:

World Environment Day campaign – Project GreenHands

2. Who plants the trees and where are they planted?

PGH is providing trees to farmers for planting in their farmlands. PGH has been working with farmers in Pudukottai, Erode, Tirunelveli districts of Tamil Nadu.

3. How can trees be tracked?

While taking saplings from PGH, the farmer has to register his name, contact details and location. This is stored in the PGH database. After the plantation is done, a survey will be carried out by PGH to confirm whether the saplings have been planted. So when an individual donates for a tree, he will be assigned a tree from the PGH database.

4. Will we get anything if we donate?

Once you make a donation, you will get an email with tree certificate indicating the total number of trees planted by you.

5. How can we donate?

You can donate online: log on to giveisha.org/pgh and offline: or send an Indian Rupee DD/ Cheque drawn in the favour of “ Isha Outreach” to Project GreenHands , Isha Yoga Center, Velliangiri Foothills, Semmedu post, Coimbatore – 641114.

6. How much is the minimum donation?

One Sapling: Indian Rupees 50/- (about 1 Dollar)

7. After I donate, what is the next step? How do I know what is happening and when the sapling planted?

Once you make a donation, you will get an email with tree certificate indicating the total number of trees planted by you. A tree tracking code will be specified on the certificate. Using this code you can track your tree starting Jan 1st 2013, on projectgreenhands.org/track

8. Why this time gap – why can’t I track the tree immediately?

The planting season begins in the month of September and trees can be planted till December. After the plantation is done, a survey will be carried out by PGH to confirm where the saplings have been planted. After which each donor will be assigned a tree from PGH’s database.

9. If I donate at separate occasions, will I get different certificates? Can I have it in the name of someone other than me?

Yes, you will get a different tree certificate each time you make a donation. If you want the certificate in someone else’s name, please fill in their particulars in the Donor details.

10. Are there any centers/stalls where something is set up for this campaign? If so, where?

No, the donation can be done only Online or a DD/ Cheque needs to be sent to PGH directly.

11. As someone who has donated and is interested in this campaign, how can I help? What can I do?

Many people may get inspired just by seeing your enthusiasm for the project. Spreading the word is the most important help you can do to us. You can take the message to all your friends and relatives by send them emails and videos, sharing on facebook, twitter and other social media.

Create your own campaign page on the Give Isha site and get all your colleagues and friends to join you.

Registration can be done online here. There is an early bird discount for those who register before Nov 30, 2011. Teachers in educational institutions get the same as NUS staff, and all students only pay $130.

From the conference brochure:

2007 a milestone was attained in demographic history. The world became officially ‘urban’ – 50 percent of the global population was classified as living in urban areas. This is significant in two ways:

Firstly the speed at which urbanization has become the norm of living globally. The first cities in human history were only formed some 8,000 to 10,000 years ago and the first urban country, Britain, was a recent phenomenon in 1900.

Secondly, the global population is expanding rapidly and this means a significant demographic shift. In 2011, the global population hit 7 billion, so over 3.5 billion people are now living in urban areas.

The Asia Perspective:

By 2050, Asia is likely to have over 60 percent of its population living in cities. Asia will also have the largest number of megacities (over 10 million people) this century. Asia’s urban growth is a major challenge for governments planning their countries’ development paths and national goals. A perennial question confronting policy makers, planners, government officials and political leaders is how to handle urban growth. Asia has some of the world’s oldest cities hence the region has a long track record of continuous urban development. Can one derive lessons from Asia’s urban past? And how shall Asia face its urban future? This conference will provide an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective to the human-environment nexus in urban living in Asia. It will focus on the challenges that confront Asian governments seeking to sustain their urban nodes as creative assets rather than demographic liabilities.”

The conference aims to provide an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary perspective to the human environment nexus in urban living in Asia. It will focus on some of the challenges before Asian governments in sustaining their urban nodes as creative assets rather than demographic liabilities. These include water sustainability; food security; addressing ‘brown’ issues (pollution control, waste management, industrial ecology), renewable energy; quality of living (housing, transport and urban infrastructure); preserving biodiversity; and provisions of adaptation and mitigation measures for climate change impacts. There has been a wide range of environmental policy and other state interventions to address these urban ‘problems’, including carbon taxes, polluter pay schemes, economic incentives, laws and their enforcement, and public environmental education. There have also been grounded and applied concepts of environmental cities and a critical evaluation can be made of their ability and effectiveness to solve current urban challenges in Asian contexts. This conference will offer the opportunity for existing policies, theories and plans on the management of the urban environment to be evaluated, and proposals for the future examined.

About the M.Sc.(Environmental Management) [MEM] Programme

The MEM is a multi-disciplinary integrated programme, which provides education in environmental management to senior and mid-level managers and officers in corporations, institutions and government, and non-governmental organizations. The programme equips graduates with the necessary knowledge to properly manage the environment and to deal with the challenges of an environmentally conscious society and international market. It enables them to assume responsible and influential roles to make sound decisions that support sustainable development. The programme is jointly offered by seven faculties and schools in the NUS, demonstrating its broad-based approach to education in the field of the environment. These are: Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences; Faculty of Engineering; Faculty of Law; Faculty of Science; NUS Business School; Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine; and School of Design and Environment (host faculty). The programme has links with Yale University’s School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, and Duke University’s Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences.

The main component of the MEM programme is a group of seven Core Modules: Business and Environment; Environmental Economics and Public Policy; Environmental Law; Environmental Management and Assessment; Environmental Planning; Environmental Science; and Environmental Technology. Candidates must also complete either: (i) a Dissertation; or (ii) a Study Report and an Elective Module. The third component of the MEM programme is the Seminar Series. Candidates must attend a minimum of ten specially arranged seminars, and complete a report on the series.

The MEM programme can be undertaken either Full-Time or Part-Time. Full-time students can complete the programme in one academic year; and Part-time students can complete it in two academic years. The students of the MEM programme come from a variety of disciplines and from both the public and private sectors. They include architects, engineers, scientists, veterinary surgeons, lawyers, teachers, health workers, journalists, and forest and park managers. About half of each year’s cohorts are Singaporeans, permanent residents or foreigners working in Singapore, while the rest are from abroad. The countries include: Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Mauritius, Myanmar, Nepal, Norway, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States and Vietnam.

Watched live online by 9 million people, the purpose of the coverage was to debunk various climate denial theories, and raise awareness about the reality of Climate Change. The hourly presentations covering 24 hours spanned across various time zones from Mexico to Dubai, Jakarta, Pakistan and India (in Asia) to New York.

We show the final hour from New York presented by Al Gore. All the hourly presentations typically started with an overview of the Climate Change problem, rebuttals against climate deniers, followed by a panel discussion.

More information about Earth Day:

According to the Earth Day Network,

“The first Earth Day, on April 22, 1970, activated 20 million Americans from all walks of life and is widely credited with launching the modern environmental movement. The passage of the landmark Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Endangered Species Act and many other groundbreaking environmental laws soon followed. Growing out of the first Earth Day, Earth Day Network (EDN) works with over 22,000 partners in 192 countries to broaden, diversify and mobilize the environmental movement. More than 1 billion people now participate in Earth Day activities each year, making it the largest civic observance in the world.”

He was invited by the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP), one of Asia’s leading thinktanks, and introduced to the audience by the Dean of the School, Dr Kishore Mahbubani. Dr Mahbubani himself is a well known public figure in the region, and author of books such as “Can Asians Think” and “Beyond the Age of Innocence.” He commenced the night with a sober note, “We are facing the biggest challenge in human history. The Earth is in distress. We don’t know what to do, and how to do it.”

Friedman asserted that though Hot, Flat and Crowded prima facie talks of energy and the environment, it is essentially about America rediscovering its ‘groove’ as a global leader by addressing the major and pressing problems of the world.

Hot is the planet warming up with increasing human made greenhouse gas emissions in the thin atmosphere that blankets it. Flat is a globalised and interconnected world, where rising middle classes aspire for higher “America –like’” consumption standards. Crowded is because our population is going to balloon to 9 billion by 2050, with higher per capita consumption, and more pressure on the finite resources of the earth.

Here are some of the main points he brought out in his talk to an audience of about a thousand invited by the LKYSPP.

The environmental crisis and the financial crisis are flip sides of the same problem. 2007-2010 was when the markets and Mother Nature hit the wall, an early warning heart attack that we are growing unsustainably -financially and ecologically.

The world is seeing a never ending growth loop which is clearly unsustainable and has to be broken. Friedman explained it thus:

More and more factories built in China –> More and more stuff produced –> More and more coal used (with emissions) –>More and more dollars for China –>More and more Treasury Bills issued by the US –>More and more factories in China…and back again to the loop.

The fundamental problems in both financial markets and in Mother Nature are due to three fold reasons. We are

Underpricing Risk (such as credit risk in subprime mortgage or the risk of carbon molecules in fossil fuel emissions)

Privatising Gain ( Profits accrue to owners of capital who benefit from financial markets, or due to cheap oil and coal)

Socialising Losses ( If things blow up, the taxpayer bears the losses through bailouts, and our children and future generations pay the consequences of disruptive climate change)

There is a larger ‘values breakdown’ in society. We have moved from sustainable values that used to be the basis for relationships, communities, business and politics, to situational values of the baby boomer generation. Ploughing up hundreds of acres of biodiverse Amazon rainforest to plant soyabean, is an example of situational value which places financial gain over long term sustainable value – which would dictate that this is the wrong thing to do.This is dangerous, because both markets and Mother Nature are fiercesome, cruel and unemotional when it comes to excesses. According to Friedman, if we don’t find a more sustainable way we will be ‘less free than if the Soviet Union had won the cold war.’

Friedman sees five megatrends that impact the world tremendously:

- Supply and Demand of Energy and Natural Resources. Demand is increasing at a mind boggling rate, with the rise of new consumerist middle classes in China and India and other nations. In two cities he had visited – Doha in Qatar and Dalian in China, another ‘Manhattan’ had sprung up in a span of only three years. This kind of development has staggering implications for resource and energy use. Friedman calls this the problem as ‘Too Many Americans.’ If the whole world caught up with American consumption rates, it would mean an equivalent of 72 billion people on this planet.

- The impact on Petropolitics is the clear inverse relationship between the price of oil and the political freedom in the major oil exporting nations – which is graphed by the ‘Freedom Index’ By increasing our demand for fossil fuels, we are indirectly supporting petrodictatorships in these countries.

- Climate Change as an issue is so polluted by climate deniers, he prefers not to use the term Global Warming using ‘Global Wierding’ instead. This is because the result of increasing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is going to be increasingly extreme, frequent, and violent weather patterns.

In a tongue-in-cheek way, Friedman says he prefers to be like “Dick Cheney” during the Iraq war, who said “if there is 1% chance that nuclear weapons are found in Iraq, it would irreversible and catastrophic.”
Likewise he says, “If there is even 1% chance that what climate scientists say is true, it would be irreversible and catastrophic for the planet.”

- Energy Poverty is something 1.6 billion people on this planet face as they are not connected to electric grid. This is going to leave behind a vast part of the population behind, as they have inadequate access to water, education, and technology.

- Biodiversity Loss is happening at an unprecedented rate. We are facing the fastest rate of extinction since the age of the dinosaurs – about 1 new species every 20 minutes disappears, which is about 1000 times the background rate of extinction.

Friedman asserts that all these 5 problems can be solved by the “Green Revolution” by finding a way to produce “abundant, cheap, clean and reliable electrons” and the country which does that will get the most global respect. He wants that country to be America, as he thinks this is the only way that clean technology and energy will scale up with the speed required to solve the global crisis. It’s not going to be ‘easy’ – a revolution implies suffering and radical change. At the moment, the world is seeing is only incremental and small scale change – or to put it more cynically, “we’re all having a big green party.”

According to Friedman, “We’ll know when we are really having a Green Revolution and that is when the word “green’ disappears. There won’t be a ‘green’ building. You simply won’t be able to build something that doesn’t adhere to the highest energy and resource efficient standards. There won’t be a ‘green’ car, only a car which is built to highest mileage and environmental standards. “

Friedman lays more faith on engineers and entrepreneurs than on regulators or “192 countries trying to agree on reduction in emissions” as in the COP meetings, for change to happen. Price matters in the Green Revolution, and a durable, long term price system for carbon is critical. He also favours subsidy support to renewables especially in the intial take-off stages, as well as a carbon and gasoline tax to reduce the price advantage on fossil fuels.

For systemic change to happen that supports ‘an ecosystem of innovation’, one requires firm leadership and Friedman wishes America could be China for a day, just to be able to impose all the rules and regulations to support the green revolution, and let the system take over.

My thoughts on Friedman’s call for a green revolution:

- It looks increasingly like it may not be America’s call to take leadership on Climate Change. China for good or bad, does have the political advantange of firm leadership (or dictatorship) to make swift decisions on green technology. Friedman himself admitted during the Q & A that necessity is the “mother of innovation” and that China is moving faster toward clean technology, as it discovers the downsides of environmental pollution.

(According to BNEF, new global investment in clean energy reached $243 billion in 2010, up from $186.5 billion in 2009. Last year’s investment figures double those from 2006. The main factors in this growth were the massive Chinese market, the expansion of offshore wind, hot European solar markets and global R&D.

Investment in China was up 30% to $51.1bn in 2010, by far the largest figure for any country. In 2009 Asia and Oceania overtook the Americas, and in 2010 it narrowed the gap further on Europe, Middle East and Africa as the leading region of the world for clean energy investment. Facts from Renewable Energy World )

- My question to Friedman during the Q & A was that though removal of fossil fuel subsidies is one key step in giving the right price signals to the market, political leaders do get ‘wobbly knees’ when actually taking action on this front. I wanted to know if there are case studies of countries who have been successful with this. Look at India where the price of onions is enough to give politicians the jitters. (I also had at the back of my mind the reversal of Bolivian President Eva Morales’ decision to raise fuel prices over the new year. India too had deregulated petrol prices in June 2010 but not diesel prices because it was too sensitive an issue. )

Friedman didn’t answer my question directly, but he did give an interesting perspective about what fossil fuel subsidies really mean to an economy. If you don’t tax fuel in your country, you are simply handing that money over to the oil cartel, instead of using it for education, health and green tech within your own economy. Even though the per unit price of oil goes up, the total bill goes down leading to a more efficient system. Yes, it’s a difficult decision, but it has to be done, and all it may take is one gutsy polician to bring about that change.

- Friedman doesn’t really mention a role for civic society, in fact he dismisses all the small, green actions that individuals take, without a larger systemic, macroeconomic change happening. My take on this is yes, we absolutely need systemic change, but more often than not, it happens when millions of individuals start demanding that change, and no matter what level it is – at an individual level (as a consumer, employee or neighbour), at a community level, at a national or international level – it is at the end of the day, individuals and groups of ‘thoughtful citizens’ who will change the world.

We can’t hang around and wait much longer for that change to happen, as there is no “later” in Friedman’s sober conclusion. I share his cautious optimism in these words, “We have exactly enough time – starting now.”

It’s by Atulya Venkataraman, a Grade V student of UWCSEA, Singapore. It reads thus:

19th May 2010.

Dear Madam,

Please allow me to introduce myself as a student in Grade 5 at United World College of South East Asia, Singapore. We are currently studying climate change and its impact on communities. My friend Jun Oh Koo (Korea) and I are collaborating on a project to present at our school exhibition on 25th May.

While we as a civilization are working to prevent climate change and avoid catastrophes, we must prepare for calamities. There is a significant danger— many islands such as Vanuatu in the Pacific, Maldives in the Indian Ocean, costal areas of India and Bangladesh will be greatly affected and perhaps even disappear under the sea. This would displace large segments of population living in these areas. Many of these people are already among the weakest in an economic sense.

These displaced populations will have nowhere to go and will become refugees, similar to the refugees of a war. Currently the definition of refugees under the UNHCR is that a refugee is a person who “owing to well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country.” (From the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees).

It is important to notice that people who have lost their homes, their lively hoods and just about everything, because the lands they have lived in traditionally for thousands of years are a group of people who are not covered under this definition. To paraphrase Socrates, I am neither a Greek nor an Athenian; but, a citizen of the world.

As such I believe it is my humble duty to propose that the definition of refugees as defined by the UNHCR be changed to include people displaced by climate change. Perhaps greater minds are already dealing with this issue and I am only adding my voice in support of these great minds. This small step will provide a giant leap of relief for millions who will unwittingly be born refugees 50 years from now.

In 2050, when I am 61, I do not know what the world will be like; but, Madam as a 11 year old today if I can get you to address this issue, my life might not be entirely wasted in playing video games rather than doing my school work as my mother always reminds me.

Sincerely,

My reply to Atulya:

Dear Atulya,

Thank you for your letter. It shows an impressive level of maturity for one as young as you.

Trust me, your life will never be wasted, given the care and concern you show for people, especially the vulnerable. Your letter indicates that you are way ahead of those three or four or even five times your age, who are too busy with their own lives to create a positive change for the world.

Your suggestion is extremely powerful. The mere act of including climate refugees in the UNHCR definition would give the much needed attention and focus to this issue. Unfortunately, the “great minds” (borrowing your words) are dragging their feet on this important change that needs to be incorporated in the way we look at climate refugees and prepare well in advance before calamity strikes.

So far, the official UNHCR postion as quoted here in their magazine (Page 13) is, ” While agreeing that the refugee agency was already involved in a limited way in environmental issues and helping internally displaced persons, UNHCR said there were fundamental differences between the two groups. Refugees could not turn to their own governments for protection because states were often the source of persecution and they therefore needed international assistance, it said, whereas environmental migrants continue to enjoy the same national protection whatever the state of the landscape. Lumping both groups unde the same heading would further cloud the issues and could undermine efforts to help and protect either group and to address the root causes of either type.”

However “national protection” is not going to be very helpful, because most of the environmental migrants are from developing countries, which do not have the resources to manage this kind of large scale migration, even if most of it is internal. These countries do not contribute to much of the global climate change, which is largely due to consumption by richer, developed nations. It is only fair that more is done to help these countries with adaptation efforts.

More people need to come forward to press for this amendment in the UNHCR definition, so yes, I am forwarding this letter with a copy to you to the UNHCR, and am also broadcasting this message through the UNHCR facebook page, Twitter and LinkedIn. I hope many people will see your message and also support this issue.

While we await UNHCR’s reply, you have work cut out for you this summer! I hope you’re game for it.

I know you’re young, but if you can get the help of a parent or an adult on social media, here are some ideas:

Start an online campaign on the Petition Site (check if there’s one already) and spread the word amongst your friends and family.

Set up a Facebook Like Page for this cause. Post information and stories relating to Climate Refugees for others to understand the gravity of the situation.

Send your letter (bear in mind the word limits of each magazine/newspaper) to various online and offline newspapers and magazines, such as Time, Newsweek, Guardian, The Economist, The Ecologist, The Huffington Post, The Washington Post, for example, and other regional media such as The Straits Times, The Times of India, Jakarta Post etc.

If you need any help or clarifications, let me know.

Do send us pictures of your exhibitions, and some of your write-ups and findings. I’ll be happy to post them in a blog for you.

Thank you once again. Keep up the good work!

Warm wishes,

Bhavani Prakash

Do write in to the UNHCR office in support of this issue. Send your emails to Leigh Foster at foster@unhcr.org

This is a copy of the email I sent in today:

Dear Mr. Leigh Foster,

I run an environmental website focussing on green issues in Asia called http://www.ecowalkthetalk.com/blog. I received this letter from a young boy called Atulya Venkataraman, and would like to forward his letter to your office. I support his appeal to include “Climate Refugees” in the definition of Refugees so that much needed resources and attention can be directed towards helping millions of people in poor nations by helping them adapt to the effects of Climate Change.

The current UNHCR stand that climate refugees cannot be brought under the definition of refugees, as they continue to be given protection by their respective countries, is only in theory, as most of these countries who are affected by Climate Change do not have the resources to cope with the effects.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Best regards,
Bhavani Prakash

Update on 27th May 2010:

Atulya has since started the petition at Care 2.com called Help Climate Refugees Please sign, and help him reach a goal of 5000 signatures.

Atulya along with the Head of Grade 5, Mr. Hugh Pollard kindly invited me to the UWCSEA Grade 5 PYP exhibition entitled, “One degree of Change” on 26th May 2010. I was impressed with Atulya’s exhibit and his enthusiasm for the cause. He had first heard of the issue of Climate Refugees on a BBC Radio program a couple of months ago, and that had captured his imagination.

Here is Atulya (in the middle) with his team partner, Jun Oh Koo on the left and Mr. Hugh Pollard on the right.

Four Years.Go. is an international campaign by The Pachamamma Alliance to bring about a shift in consciousness. Here is their campaign message:

Imagine turning things around in 4 years!

FOUR YEARS. GO. is a rallying call asking us all to…

- Wake Up to the enormous harm we are doing to Earth and ourselves

- Wake Up to the profound opportunity we have now to create a future to match our deepest longing and greatest dreams

- Become change agents in redirecting humanity’s current path from self-destruction to sustainability

- Do it now. Don’t wait for anyone or anything. And complete it by 2014.

There’s still time to act, but no time to waste.

More about Four Years.Go from the campaign founders

“Four Years. Go. is an initiative spearheaded by a growing worldwide coalition of leading organizations and individuals committed to building a sustainable, just and fulfilling world. It began as a partnership of Wieden + Kennedy, the largest independent advertising agency network in the world (creators of Nike’s “Just do it” advertising campaign and Lance Armstrong’s “Live Strong” yellow bracelet campaign), and The Pachamama Alliance, a nonprofit organization committed to an environmentally sustainable, spiritually fulfilling and socially just human presence on this planet. It quickly became apparent that this work had been percolating and in development by other organizations, which are now part of the core team, namely P:5Y—Peace in Five Years, and the 2020 Fund. Some 450 allied organizations have come on board as supporters of this global movement, and that number grows daily.”

“The new FOUR YEARS. GO. campaign was launched in March 2010, and in its first month has reached more than 50,000 people. Recognizing that the next few years provide us the monumental challenge and opportunity of impacting the trajectory of life on this planet for the next 1,000 years, FOUR YEARS. GO. is a common rallying call for collaborative action across the globe. The campaign is fostering a coalition amongst individuals, NGOs, companies, and communities to ignite a movement whose goal is catalyzing a shift in humanity to a sustainable, just and fulfilling path by 2014.”

With the fall of the Berlin Wall in the 1990s, capitalism was seen as the ultimate model of success. A quick look however, at the environmental crisis facing the world today and the social inequalities that continue to persist, reveals that as an economic model, it has failed to secure planetary and human well-being.

We’re beyond the safe limit of CO2 in the atmosphere of 350ppm, thanks to an efficient and extensive fossil fuel based industrial and agricultural machinery that relentlessly spews out green house gases into the atmosphere. Wealth is concentrated in the hands of the few. According to the UNU-WIDER report, “the richest 10 percent of adults in the world own 85 percent of global household wealth. Of these individuals, almost half live in the US and Japan.”

On the other extreme, half of the 6 billion people of our planet live on less than two dollars a day. 2.5 billion people have little access to basic sanitation.

Capitalism is based on private ownership of the means of production, for the purpose of manufacturing and distributing commodities. The primary objective of course, is to maximise profit. The very nature of the system therefore, demands more and more consumption – something that entails using extensive exploitation of raw materials with increasingly cheap labour. Globalisation of markets for raw material, labour and consumers means that no corner of the planet is spared in the relentless pursuit of profit. Much of this has led to tremendous pollution and damage to ecosytems ranging from rivers, oceans, forests and soils beyond their capacity to regenerate themselves.

Why has capitalism or the markets failed?

1. Tragedy of the commons (a term coined by Garrett Hardin in 1968) means that a common, open access resource such as the oceans or forestry or rivers or air is bound to be over-exploited by individuals. Take fisheries, for example. Each trawler will act in its own self interest and harvest as much from the oceans as possible, because it’s trying to maximise its own profit. The degradation caused by one trawler may be small, but the collective unbridled harvesting will lead to overfishing, and the eventual collapse of the ecosystem.

2. Environmental and social costs are externalised. Someone or something else, outside of the person or company who earns the profit, bears the true impact and costs of production and consumption, and these costs are not properly priced in the market. The bananas that appear on supermarket shelves are cheap, because the true costs of pesticide use are borne by workers in the plantations, by the soil which gets degraded which in turn affects future productivity for local populations, by rivers which get contaminated by pesticide run-off, which again impacts fish-protein supply.

Can we solve these problems outside of capitalism?

Is socialism the alternative? With the collapse of the Soviet Union and Eastern European bloc we’ve already seen that the socialist economic model is not a viable one. A centrally planned economy in which the government controls all means of production and has to make trillions of economic decisions on behalf of consumers is bound to be inefficient. Take just one example, how many shoes of what size should be made available for which town? As a vehicle for resource allocation, socialism is cumbersome. However the intent of creating an equitable society is what we can take away.

Can we and should we improve the Capitalist system?

Many, including environmentalists like Jonathon Porritt as in “Capitalism as if Earth Matters” admit, even if grudgingly, that capitalism is here to stay. If we have to live with it, we might as well make it better, and here are the main thoughts put forward by free market thinkers and environmentalists alike.

1. Regulation is one way of making sure capitalist forces do not destroy natural resouces and ecosytems in a reckless manner. We’ve seen since the 1970s, a slew of environmental acts and regulations, which have no doubt been useful in checking the excess, but have by no means been adequate.

2. Tragedy of the commons- perhaps not a tragedy? Not many noticed that Elinor Ostrom was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Economics this year, and her theory is of significant importance to environmentalists. Elinor Ostrom says that common resources don’t have to necessarily face a ‘tragic” downward spiral of destruction, if we have some kind of community participation and ownership of land. So it’s not always necessary for governments to intervene, provided the community rules of governance are clearly laid out. In a sense, Elinor rules against either extremes- complete privatisation of natural resources, or at the other end total state control.

3. Green capitalism is seen as a way to achieve “sustainable development” or economic growth which does not destroy the regenerative capacities of different ecosystems. This involves changing the way we create change, by creating a vision of a sustainable world, by laying emphasis on human “well-being” rather than narrow definitions of GDP of a nation. Green capitalism involves renewable technologies, closing the loop in waste management, carbon credits and so on. However, there is still a danger that “going green” may only address some aspects of environmental destruction, while broader problems remain e.g., an electric car may be a greener option, but it does not address the fundamental issues of development such as loss of habitat, urban sprawl, increased water and energy use in power plants, or resource use in the car production. It does not ensure issues such as wealth disparity or social inequalities are addressed.

4. Market pricing for ecological and social costs. Markets need to be developed for ecosystem services so that these externalities are accounted for. This will bring about fundamental, systemic change, but is easier said in theory than in practice. Distortions such as subsidies on fossil fuel or large scale industrial agriculture or livestock farming need to be removed. If this is done, organic food for instance, will actually cost less than conventional food when the latter includes the carbon emission impact, cost of unsubsidised fossil fuel inputs for fertiliser and pesticides, fair wages for workers, and costs for effluent treatment before it reaches rivers.

Can society think out of the box?

If we were living in a feudal society, we’d probably be asking, “How can we make feudalism better?” It’s always easier to say in hindsight, “Replace it something better like parliamentary democracy.”

We as a society are now asking, “How can we make capitalism better?” Whether we like it or not, that’s where we are. To think out of the box is not easy, but sure enough one day, a new paradigm, a new model will emerge that is more just and sustainable.

Even if we were to live with the existing model, we should be cheering that all the solutions are there. We only have to go as far as Lester Brown’s “Plan B 4.0 Mobilising to Save Civilisation“ or Al Gore’s new book “Choices” where they outline the various pragmatic possibilities within existing frameworks. Solutions also lie within communities, whether they are in rural India or in the Amazon rainforest to solve local issues and manage local livelihoods sustainably.

Where there is a will, there’s a way

The more important question for society at this crucial juncture is “How do we get the political will to implement these solutions, and achieve social and environmental justice?”

As Bill McKibben said, what we are probably seeing for the very first time is a grassroots movement arising to actually push forth the political will needed, as we saw on October 24th, 2009 - the International Day of Climate Action. Paul Hawken too in his book, “Blessed Unrest” sees a worldwide grassroots movement building up to bring about change in a benign, non-violent manner.

Economic systems have come and gone and there is no reason to believe that capitalism will not be replaced by a model which is sustainable and equitable. Whether that transition comes as a result of a sudden shock to the existing system, or a result of intelligent choices that society makes is the moot question.

“You’re a part of this planet. Feel good about the rippling message now going out around the earth: if we shout it loud enough, even our leaders will hear.” BILL MCKIBBEN

The International Day of Climate Action on 24th October 2009, was a truly historic event with over 5,200 events organised in 181 countries (on final count). Such widespread political action is quite unprecedented in the planet’s history, according to Bill McKibben the founder of 350.org

Thanks to the efforts of local environmental groups, such as ECO Singapore, Vegetarian Society Singapore and ACRES, about 300-400 people turned up on Saturday morning at 8 am, all buzzing with the excitement of making the number 350 as a strong call to world leaders, when they meet in Copenhagen COP15 this December. Watch the action here :

Here are the aerial shots of the event that were captured by Clarence Tan of VSS as well as other pictures on the ground, thanks to Neil Madhvani of VSS. The event was followed by a Walkathon to Singapore Management University, with lots of activities organised by the three environment groups mentioned before.

Here are Bill McKibben’s reactions on the historic Day:

Here are some amazing pictures of the events all over the world. And enjoy the most creative 350 formations here.

It was really exciting to be part of this historic day. At least 20 or 30 years from now, when our children or perhaps our grandchildren question us as to what we did to create a livable planet for them, we can proudly look back to this day, and say, “Yes, we were there, and we did everything we possibly could to send the message of change to the world.”
